Meet Dr. Heloisa Soares
a Capitol Hill visit to advocate for patients with the Utah delegation.
Doctor, Researcher, Advocate
We would like to introduce one of our Scientific Advisory Committee members, Heloisa Soares, MD, PhD, a medical oncologist with a focus on neuroendocrine cancers. Dr. Soares is an associate professor at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at University of Utah where she also serves as the Medical Director for the Clinical Trials Office. In 2022, she was awarded support to establish the NET DESTINATION CARE Program for the University of Utah.
Dr. Soares is active in many organizations. She serves on the boards of Healing NET and the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS). She is an NCI NET taskforce member and a panel member for the Neuroendocrine and Adrenal Tumors in the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.
A passionate advocate for patients, Dr. Soares was named a member of the President’s Circle of ASCO’s 2022 Advocacy Champions.

Enjoying family life
AT the National Cancer Institute where “baby” brother Ricardo is participating in Dr. Jaydira Del Rivero’s natural history study.
MOTHER, WIFE, SISTER
Mia Tepper, Healing NET's Interim Executive Director, had a chance to speak with Dr. Soares to learn more about her life beyond medicine:
It may be obvious that Heloisa is a very talented physician from her various accolades, but what you may not know about her is that she is a wife and a dedicated mother of two young children. She also has a deeper personal connection with neuroendocrine cancer: Her “baby” brother was diagnosed with a NET in 2022. How she balances her time between family, work and travel is a mystery to me, but she humbly shared this thought:
“I am not sure if there is truly a balance… I think it is more of an integration. I am blessed to have a very supportive family that allows me to do what I love. I know that we all face challenges every day in life. But for me, when I face adversity, I see as an opportunity to be better, whether is as a wife, mom or doctor… and that keeps me moving.”
